If you are using a lamp to symbolize the sun as you teach your children about the phases of the moon, don't touch the bare socket. Not only will it hurt like mad, but your kids will laugh at you as you jump around in pain.

One drunken college night long ago, when a couple of friends and I were trying to sleep in the Wabash Arboretum, I got the idea that we should unscrew the giant lamposts along the main path so that it would be easier to sleep. So I got on my friends' shoulders and clumsily started to remove the light bulbs. It was not my "brightest" moment. The shock was so terrible that I fell to the ground with pain and all the way up to my shoulder. But most importantly, the light went out and it did become much easier to sleep.
